HIKING IN THE PLATANISTOS VALLEY
(Epanochori - Platanistos - Potami: route of about 4 hours)
The springs in the enchanting location of Epanochorio and the sycamore trees suggest to us the spectacular landscape of the Platanistos valley. The dirt road leads us to Mastrogiannai and through the old school path we go down to the bridge and proceed towards the location Elliniko - Agios Konstantinos. We continue along the riverside route to the Aegean, gazing at the waters of the Kavotoros strait and the island of Andros. We arrive at one of the most beautiful beaches of outer Evia and certainly of the entire Aegean, Potami.
GORGE OF DIMOSARIS
On the back side of Ochi begins one of the most beautiful Greek gorges. The name "Dimosaris" is a Byzantine toponym. It was one of the main roads of communication in southern Evia, connecting the villages of Kavotoros with Karystos. On the path parallel to the river, remains of the medieval stone-paved cobblestones are preserved. It is covered by huge trees, which the sun does not penetrate. Gargling springs, blue-green lakes and chirping birds create a unique feeling. The route is passable and takes 3 ½ to 4 hours. It ends in the village of Lenosaoi and continues from there to the beach of Kalliani as a narrow and steep valley. The villages Lenosaioi-Kallianoi are also connected by a dirt road. During the summer months, the Municipality of Karystos organizes hiking routes in the gorge. OHIS SHELTER At an altitude of 1398 m, it dominates the bay of Karystos and is a balcony overlooking the Aegean. Even the mountains of Chios, Samos and Peloponnese can be seen on a "clear" day. From ancient times to the present day, it was a sacred place of worship: of Hera in the past, of the Prophet Elias today. There, on August 2, one of the most traditional festivals of the region takes place (of the Prophet Elias, with the old calendar). A little below the summit and next to the chestnut forest, the last primeval chestnut forest of southern Evia, there is the mountain refuge (altitude 1050 m.) since 1962 which can accommodate 15 guests. It is a well-organized accommodation for those who love the mountain and nature and is reached by car that reaches the edge of the path to the summit.
KASTANOLOGOS
East of the peak of Ochi, at about 1000 meters altitude, there is a century-old chestnut forest. A natural museum with every tree a living sculpture. Its unique aesthetic value ranks it among Landscapes of Special Natural Beauty.THERMAL SPRINGS OF EDIPSO & SPA
The thermal springs of Edipsos are considered to be among the most comprehensive in therapeutic ingredients and among the most effective worldwide. From the mythological era when Deucalion and Pyrrha want to give birth with the help of the waters of Edipsos, the therapeutic effects of its hot springs on chronic gynecological diseases can be clearly seen. After all, the etymology of the name of Edipsos reveals something like this. The word "Edipsos" comes from the vulva (genital organ) and the verb Απτομαι (to touch, grasp and by extension heal through contact). However, in addition to chronic gynecological diseases, according to the experts' opinions, the waters of the Edipsos springs are also indicated for degenerative arthropathies, rheumatism, radiculitis, back pain, sciatica, post-traumatic deformities and ankylosis, peripheral neuritis, migraines, tendinitis, vasculopathy, diseases of the endocrinological cycle and others). The action of the baths is strong and is always done with the advice of specialist doctors (bath therapists). Most of the thermal springs of Edipsos, spring up at the south-eastern end of the spa town. The sight of the vapors of the hot water is impressive, the temperature of which in some cases reaches and exceeds 80 degrees Celsius. Most of the thermal springs spring up in the area around the EOT facilities, but in the area, apart from the EOT, there are state-of-the-art SPA units capable of meeting even the most demanding needs.
