ABDERA (Archaeological Site) - Xanthi

Colony of Clazomena (656 - 652 BC), and Teo (545 BC), Ionian cities of Asia Minor. In the 5th century BC Abdera was one of the richest members of the First Athenian League. Homeland of many famous figures of antiquity, such as Democritus, Protagoras, Leucippus. They are located near the sea, between Lake Vistonida and the Nestos estuary. From the two harbors of the city, parts of the granite boulders of a jetty with a circular tower are visible in the water today. The walls of the 4th century BC are preserved in good condition (and gateway between two quadrangular towers), remains of richly decorated houses with peristyle courtyards (from Classical to Roman times), pottery and purple processing workshops.

On top of the hill dominate the walls of the acropolis. Extensive cemeteries with burial mounds were also found (the findings are exhibited in the Museums of Kavala and Komotini) and a theater, badly damaged, on the northern side of the city. The city was destroyed in 370 BC. from the Trivals and in 170 BC. from the Romans. Outside the precinct of the Middle Byzantine walls, in front of the western gate of ancient Abdira, ruins of a three-aisled Early Christian basilica (6th century) and an octagonal baptistery. Numerous architectural sculptures. Near the basilica, a cemetery of the early Christian and Byzantine era.
