In the coastal locations of Agia Marina, Korakas and Spitha, in the Laconian south, visitors are surprised and awed by the fossilized witnesses of a distant past.
The findings in the fossil sites are unique in the European area and of inestimable scientific importance.
Millions of years ago, various geological rearrangements resulting from earthquakes and volcanic activity resulted in the fossilization of the area's paleoflora. Subsequently, the organic matter from trees, plants and molluscs was replaced by silicon and calcium solutions.
Roots and trunks of trees that reach up to one meter in height and a multitude of fossilized creatures are preserved today in a large area of the beach of Agios Nikolaos, forming a valuable geological museum.
The approach to the Petrified Forest is made after driving from Neapolis to the head village of Agios Nikolaos on the south side of the Vatican and continue from there on a dirt road to Agia Marina and then 100m. right to the sea.
The approach from the sea is very easy since it is located in the bay of the same name of Agia Marina east of Prophet Ilias. Beautiful colors in the waters with two beautiful sandy beaches make up the rare and unique landscape of the petrified forest. The mooring is comfortable while carved bints and steps will provide you with all the comforts.
