It is one of the most important archaeological museums of the country, with the main exhibits being the artistic treasures of ancient Macedonia. It includes many interesting collections and unique objects from the prehistoric period to the Roman era. The exhibits come from the Greater Thessaloniki Area, Halkidiki and Central Macedonia.
In its appropriately arranged rooms are exhibited:
-Prehistoric sherds and vessels, weapons, household utensils, tools and objects of daily use, from regions of Macedonia and Thrace, where prehistoric settlements were discovered (Olynthos, Vergina, Paradimi Komotini, etc.)
- Hellenistic and pre-Roman sculptures, capitals, tombstones, inscriptions and architectural members of buildings.
-Roman sculptures in a wide variety and copies of ancient sculptures, bronze and clay figurines, Roman vases, mosaic floors of exceptional art and technique, architectural members from public buildings and temples (among them a marble arch from the Palace of Galerius in Thessaloniki with a relief representation of Galerius and Thessaloniki (or Fortune) personified etc.)
Of particular interest are the recent finds of wonderful art from Sindos, dating back to the 5th and 4th BC. century (gold jewelry, bronze utensils, tools, weapons, etc.), as well as the well-known findings from excavations in Derveni, Thessaloniki (among them the wonderful bronze krater of Derveni, dating back to around 330 BC, as well as the only papyrus discovered in Greece). The most important exhibits are certainly the treasures of the royal tombs of Vergina, which are exhibited in a special room and prove the high degree of development of art (and especially metalwork) in the region of Macedonia. Among them are the famous golden urn, the golden wreath, the gold and ivory shield of Philip, the unique iron Macedonian chest, the Macedonian helmet, portraits of eminent Macedonians in ivory, the unique gold-plated cloth of purple color, etc.
