EXHIBITION OF BYZANTINE AND POST-BYZANTINE ANTIQUITIES - Sikinos

In Sikinos there are six Byzantine churches decorated with frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries, proving the importance of Sikinos during the era of Latin rule, while the numerous churches built around the Castle, in the Chora and the Village, with their wood-carved temples and images define another flourishing period of the island from the 17th to the 19th century.
The most impressive monument of Sikinos remains Episkopi, a Roman mausoleum that was converted into a Christian church. It is a monument of outstanding archaeological, historical and architectural value, not only for the island but also for the entire Greek area.
The exhibition held on the floor of the Sikinou Community building in the Castle of Chora tries to highlight these aspects of the history of Sikinos through the highlighting of its monuments. The exhibition building is a typical example of a typical two-story house of the medieval fortified settlement of Sikinos.
The Exhibition consists of three spaces: the first large room includes a photographic exhibition in three sections: the Byzantine churches, the Bishopric and the post-Byzantine Sikinos with the Castle. In addition to the photographic material, the topic of the Episcopate is completed with an exact plaster copy on a natural scale of the stone pessico - part of the early Byzantine iconostasis located in the church and forming the basis of the Holy Altar. In the two smaller rooms in the background, post-Byzantine icons, two doorways, and a curtain of the Beautiful Gate are exhibited.
