The Byzantine Museum is located in the area of the SE acropolis (Its-Kale) of the castle of Ioannina. It is a two-storey building, on the ground floor of which the central collection of the Museum is housed and which houses finds (sculptures, coins, ceramics, icons, door frames, gospels) from the 4th to the 19th century. This permanent exhibition is developed in seven rooms that correspond to three exhibition units (Pale-Christian, Byzantine, Post-Byzantine), with finds that come from all over Epirus and are indicative of the history and art of the Epirus region during these periods.
The vaulted building exhibits most of the two most important collections, of Archbishop Spyridon and Ioannidis, which were donated to the Archaeological Museum of Ioannina. An effort is made to highlight the unity of ecclesiastical and secular objects and emphasis is placed on the presentation of Byzantine techniques.
The museum has a pottery, fresco, mosaic and stone conservation workshop as well as a storage area in the basement for receiving the excavation findings. It also has spaces for periodical exhibitions and other activities (events, exhibitions, lectures, educational programs) and a shop.
