The museum is housed in a traditional mansion, which consists of a kitchen, a cistern and a courtyard.
The exhibits cover the time period from prehistory to modern times and originally belonged to small private collections that were granted for the enrichment of the museum.
Ancient inscriptions, sculptures from the early Christian period as well as amphorae are exhibited in the courtyard of the museum.
The exhibits of the museum include tombstones, vases, lamps, coins from the Roman period to the chivalry.
Prominent among the exhibits are those of the prehistoric period, as they illuminate an unknown aspect of the long history of the island of Symi.
In addition, the collection is enriched with maps of the island from various historical periods, photographic material with various representative examples of ecclesiastical painting spanning from the Byzantine period to the chivalry and post-Byzantine times as well as examples of post-Byzantine painting.
The photos depicting the early Christian basilica found in Niborio are special. The museum also exhibits images from the post-Byzantine period.
All museum exhibits are accompanied by clear mnemonic panels.
