The Boura Monastery is located near the village of Leontari, from which it is 6 km away, while it is next to the Leontari-Sparti road. It is built on a verdant hill, at a distance of 4 km from the picturesque village of Falaisia.
The monastery is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin but celebrates on August 23rd (rendition of the Dormition of the Virgin).
The exact date of construction of the monastery is not known, but it is assumed that it was built in the middle of the 12th century. From its foundation, it was a male monastery. In the pre-revolutionary years, as during the revolution of '21, it was the cradle of the struggle for liberation.
After all, the monastery seems to have been a fortress. The "Tower", a building of the Monastery 10 meters high, is with its battlements a testimony of the resistance of the monks against the Turks.
In the revolution of 1770 the monastery was looted by Turkalvans who killed all the monks and destroyed the frescoes. Later, during Ibrahim's raid in 1825-26, the monks put up a brave resistance against the Turco-Egyptians, until they were all killed.
In 1932 the Monastery was annexed to the Holy Forerunner Monastery and dissolved, because it had few monks. In 1934 it was reopened with a few nuns who came from the nearby Monastery of Ampelakiou. In 1952 its property was given to the landless people of Falesia and since then it started to decline. In 1984, a group of nuns was installed and over a period of 15 years, they maintained and remodeled the Monastery, renovating its old buildings and creating new well-kept buildings. Among the latter are the fine church of Agios Alexios, the Churches of Agioi Anargyroi, Raphael, Nikolaou and Irini and the two-story building that houses the cells, various workshops, the library and other spaces.
