West of Marpissa on the mountain mass, is the monastery of Agios Georgios Lagadas, from the 16th century. It is the monastery where the patron saint of the island, Saint Arsenios, used to practice asceticism. The monastery, which experienced periods of prosperity, was abandoned in the 1950s. The monastery was recently renovated and can be visited.
