The Holy Monastery of Faneromeni Naxos, almost by the sea, is located near the village of Keramoti to which it is connected by a path. It is dedicated to the Dormition of the Virgin, and its feast on the fifteenth of August lasts for three days. It is a male monastery with an Abbot and a monk.
It dates from the 14th century. At the end of the 16th century, the Monastery of Faneromeni Naxos became a Stauropygian Monastery following a relevant decision of the Ecumenical Patriarch of Constantinople Theoliptos I, with the consequence that it received special privileges during the Turkish occupation.
According to religious tradition, its foundation has been identified with the discovery of an image of the Virgin Mary by the crew of a ship that ran aground in the area, however, the exact date of foundation is unknown.
It is built in the form of a Venetian tower on a hill and facing the bay of the same name, Faneromeni.
The greatest heyday of the Monastery was at the beginning of the 19th century. Its important abbots were Dorotheos (Tziotis), who in 1826 created two of the first teaching schools of Naxos, Ilias Georgiadis, as well as the later, Agios Arsenios of Paros and others. In the past, many shares of Naxos belonged to the Monastery of Faneromeni.
