KARDAMOUZA MONASTERY

KARDAMOUZA MONASTERY - Lasithi

It was built around 1570-1580 and is named after the Holy Cross. It is the most important monument of popular architecture in Eastern Crete with a multitude of stone carvings, arched walls and columns with excellent sculpted troughs and capitals. The Holy Church of the Holy Cross represents the architecture of the 16th century.

Today, unfortunately, this monument is abandoned. Outside the gardens of the Monastery there are huge mulberry trees and a huge privet at the entrance of the monastery. According to tradition, anyone who goes to cut a branch from the privet gets his hand cut off.
