KARYDI MONASTERY - Chania

The Holy Monastery of Agios Georgios Karydiou belongs to the district of Apokoronos, east of the Prefecture of Chania. It is under restoration by the Archaeological Service from 1996 until today. The Monastery is also referred to as Metochi of the Monastery of the Holy Trinity of Tzagarolo (Venetocretan brothers of the 17th century). In the 19th century it experienced its full heyday due to the reputation of its olive mills area. In the area of the Monastery there are 2 oil mills of the late Venetian period which confirm the rural character of Metohi. One is single-bay with 2 twin arches inside and the second is two-bay with 12 arches on its western side. Parts of the 4 olive mills and the millstones that operated with the help of animals are preserved from the second olive mill. This olive press is newer than the first one and was built in 1863 based on plans by Fr.
