MONASTERY OF SAINT GEORGE

MONASTERY OF SAINT GEORGE - Lefkada

The dissolved Monastery of Agios Georgios is built on a plateau of Mount Skaroi near the settlement of Kolyvata. The Monastery was founded (or renovated) in 1611 and functioned as a convent. In the 17th - 18th century, he owned a large property while exploiting the timber (a unique type of oak) from the Skaro forest. In 1727, the monastery owned 8 shares, 708 acres of arable fields and 900 sheep and goats. Between 1925-32, the property of the Monastery was expropriated, then the Monastery and its important library were dismantled and finally the monastery was looted and ruined. The church of Agios Georgios dates back to the beginning of the 18th century. The entrance to the temple is through 2 marble columns supporting a vaulted lintel. In 1709 the church was expanded, while in 1724 the wood-carved gilded icon was created, which is a copy of the icon of Agios Minas of Lefkada. Inside, there are preserved frescoes on the eastern wall of the church (end of the 18th century) as well as the diptychs of the intention. The Monastery celebrates on April 23.
