Until 1925, the island was part of the Vatopedi Monastery of Mount Athos, where 2-3 monks lived who managed the property and had as assistants about 20 workers from the surrounding area. They were engaged in cultivating fields, grazing animals and picking olives. At the beginning of 1925, the island was granted to refugees from Asia Minor, specifically from the islands of Propontis, Gallimi, Pasalimani and Skupia. Coming from these regions that were neighboring Constantinople, the refugees brought with them their culture, manners and customs.
Ammouliani is located in the bay of Mount Athos and is 130 km from Thessaloniki and 2 nautical miles from the opposite coast of Trypiti. The ferry routes are at regular intervals throughout the day. It has an area of 4.5 km. Hills and small valleys alternate on the surface of the island, which is overgrown with olive trees and low vegetation.
The coasts alternate forming coves with wonderful sandy beaches. The main beaches where one can enjoy the clear blue sea are Alikes, Megali Ammos, Ai Giorgis, Karagatsia, Faka, Tsaska, Nisakia and many more equally beautiful.
