Today, about 150 residents live in Agathonisi. They are mainly engaged in animal husbandry and fishing. As the island is rich in catches there are many fish farms, such as in Vathi Pigadi and in the sheltered bay of Katholikos.
At Easter, the lamb is not served on the spit but stuffed with rice in the oven.
In August, on the 23rd, the festival of Panagia takes place.
One can go to Agathonisi very easily as it has daily communication during the summer with Leros, Patmos, Lipsos, Samos and Chios. A large and modern heliport also operates on the island. The windless and quiet bay of Ag. Georgiou is ideal for the various boats that approach the island.

ARCHITECTURE
Both settlements retain several elements of traditional architecture despite the cacophony of newly built houses.

Megalo Chorio : The oldest buildings present an interesting architectural peculiarity: Rectangular, ground floor, single-chamber with a thatched roof and batten, built with dry stones and plastered with red clay.

Mikro Chorio : The architecture of the old houses is similar to the Megalo Chorio with a different layout. The houses are built in a circle around a common courtyard - atrium, while they have no external windows.

POPULAR CULTURE
The most important festivals are:
Saint Panteleimon (26/7) and Assumption of the Virgin Mary (15/8). In both, there is a long preparation of several days, with food and sweets offered by the housewives, breads baked in wood-fired ovens and of course music and dancing.
