SELERO (Archaeological Site)

Selero is a town in the municipality of Abdira, in the Regional Unit of Xanthi. It is located 10 km east of Xanthi near the villages of Filia, Simantra, Sounio, Amaxades. The Kirtzalides, a people of Asia Minor origin who were transferred centuries ago by the Ottomans to Kirtzali, Bulgaria, immigrated to these lowland villages. Selero was formerly called Gioki Seler or Göktseller. At a distance of 2 km northeast of Selero, near Simantra, Roman and early Byzantine tombs were excavated. In the area of ​​Kales, a coin from the era of Emperor Justinian I (527-565) was found as well as ruins of a Roman fortification.
