MAXIMIANOUPOLIS (Archaeological Site)

(Mosynoupolis)

The archaeological - excavation information we have about the city is minimal. In particular, the first systematic research was carried out by Charalambos Penna, which revealed in the two years 1975/76 part of the fortification. A part of the south-western wall and tombs of late Roman times were revealed. The partially preserved parts of the fortification belong to the Late Roman - Early Christian era. Although its perimeter has not been traced, it has been clarified from the parts that have been preserved in places and from the parts of the ground that it has a rectangular shape with a total length of 2,500 - 3,000 m. and that the part of the city inside the walls is estimated at 400 acres. At regular intervals (50-55 m.) it is reinforced by four-sided towers in plan. On the eastern side, the existence of a parapet was found.
