MESIMVRIA - ZONI

There was an older Thracian settlement, perhaps with the name of Mesimvria, while the Greek city of Zoni was founded at the end of the 7th century BC as a colony of Samothrace.

Two continuous precincts have been excavated: the western one that goes up to the acropolis and the more ancient eastern one lower down. In the SW. at their end the so-called "walled settlement" was revealed, a district with a separate fortification and building blocks, according to the Hippodamian system (phases from the 5th to the 2nd century BC), with houses, workshops and shops. To. part of the western enclosure, foundations of the sanctuary of Demeter (4th century BC). Near the eastern enclosure, architectural remains of the temple of Apollo (6th and 5th centuries BC), included in a larger building complex with a central courtyard and portico. The cemeteries extend west of the city. The city was finally abandoned after the 6th century. A.D. At the site of Kaklikii building foundations and marble reliefs from the early Christian period.
