MELIVOIA (Archaeological Site)

She was famous for her wine and for dyeing cloth purple from herbs. In 367/6 BC it was destroyed by the tyrant Alexander of the Pherae. In 344 BC passed into Macedonian rule. Extensive remains of a settlement (second half of the 5th century - first half of the 2nd century BC) have been identified at the Skiatha site near the village of Kato Polydendri, on a low hill. At its top (Castle), a Hellenistic wall with square towers and houses built on the slope. On the beach, above the port of Krypsiana (port of ancient Melivoia) an outdoor sanctuary was found, with steps and niches carved into the rock.
