City of Perraivia at the western entrance to the valley of Tempi. He controlled the passage between Macedonia and Southern Greece. It flourished mainly from the 6th to the 4th century BC. In Hellenistic times it was the center of many military operations.
The ancient city extends over three hills with a semi-circular layout, 2 km from today's Gonnos. The archaic wall and the ruins of an arched temple in an enclosure are preserved (perhaps Athena Poliados, original building of the 7th century BC, reconstruction in the 4th or 3rd century BC, archaic and Hellenistic clay tiles in the Museum Volos). The wall of Hellenistic times is preserved on all three hills with gates and towers. Inside the northwest gate, perhaps a sanctuary of Artemis. Various building remains at the foot of the hills were thought to belong to market buildings.
