Skopelos

SKOPELOS (Archaeological Site)

(Paperitos)

Few findings, such as the golden sword exhibited in the National Archaeological Museum, testify to the prosperity of the island during the early Mycenaean period (1600 - 1500 BC).

In classical times the island had close relations with Athens, while later it linked its fate with the Macedonians. There were three ancient cities: Peparithos (Skopelos) with remains in the medieval Castle and the harbor (the sanctuary of Asklepios on the beach also belonged here), Selinous (Loutrakis of Glossa) and Panormos with an acropolis in Paleokastro. Archaic settlement in Staphylos. In the place of Kanakis or Lakas, the pillars of the temples of Athena and Dionysos are preserved. At the site of Se-dukia on Karya mountain there are carved tombs, while an amphora workshop was discovered at Agnontas. Towers and farmhouses in Mavragani, Elliniko, Sendoukia, Prionas, Agios Georgios, Ditropos.

Episcopal seat in Byzantine times. From the 6th c. it is also called Skopelos. On the site of the Byzantine church of Episkopi, remains of an ancient pagan temple and an early Christian church.
