Thessalonica

ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF NEA MECHANIONA

(Ainea)

It was probably founded in the 8th century BC by Corinthian settlers. In 348 BC destroyed by Philip II. It settled in Thessaloniki, but was not completely abandoned until the 2nd century BC. The ancient city was located on the coastal Toumba Tambia, NW. of Nea Michaniona. Tombs of the classical times (5th - 4th century BC) were excavated with wall paintings inside them, which are exhibited together with the offerings in the Museum of Thessaloniki. Perhaps from the famous temple of Aphrodite, the location of which has not yet been identified, the architectural members of the Ionic temple exhibited in the same Museum come.
