ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF NEA KERDYLIA

(Argilos)

City of ancient Visaltia, near the mouth of Strymonas. It was founded by Ionian settlers of Andros in the middle of the 7th century BC. In the 6th century BC in turn founded new colonies in the region, Kerdylion and Tragilo. In 357 BC was occupied by the Macedonian king Philip II. The ancient city stretches on the Paliokastro hill, while the remains of its port can be seen in the sea, below the Thessaloniki-Kavala road. Part of the paved road (about 25 m long) that connected the city to the port is preserved. Parts of the wall, remains of houses and roads (late 7th - mid 4th century BC) were discovered on the hill. The finds are exhibited in the Kavala Museum.
