It was founded by the Thracians Pieres around the middle of the 7th century BC. It is mentioned by the historian Herodotus. The ancient city was located on a large hill, SE. of the Kanoni position of Orfani village. The findings are mainly mobile, from archaic depositors and classical burials-cremations in the form of simple pits (in the Kavala Museum).
