At a distance of 4.5 km NW. of Pella an impressive monument was found, known as the "Heroon of Archontiko". It consists of a circular platform with relief shields on some stone plinths and was covered by a conical mound. The monument was intended to receive the Macedonian tomb of some illustrious dead, but it was left unfinished. It is dated to the years of Antigonus Gonatas (276 - 239 BC). Just outside the Mansion stands a large tomb and bank with remains of habitation from the Neolithic era to Byzantine times. Early Bronze Age and Iron Age dwellings, parts of walls and Hellenistic buildings are being excavated.
