It is mentioned by Thucydides as the most ancient colony of Chalkidiki. It was founded by the Peloponnesians immediately after the Trojan War. It continued to be inhabited in Hellenistic and Roman times.
The ancient city is located on coastal fortified heights in the area of Mytikas, 3 km SE. of Nea Skioni. At the top of the acropolis, remains of classical buildings have been discovered.
