The city was founded in the 8th century BC. by Eretrian settlers. The ancient city extends in the area of the hotel "Sani" and its citadel was located on the peninsula of the Byzantine tower Stavro-nikita. In the area of the hotel's marina, in the sea, altars with burnt offerings and a small tank of ablutions belonging to an outdoor archaic sanctuary of Artemis Pythia were found (the findings, mid-7th - 4th century BC, in the Museum of Thessaloniki) .

In Kypsa Bay, where the "Sani" campsite is located, a Roman farmhouse with mosaic floors was excavated. A Roman settlement was found in the Gerani area, which was founded for the exploitation of the neighboring salt flats.
