(Ouranoupolis)
In the area of Nea Roda are placed the colony of Andrian's Sanis from the 7th century BC and Ouranopolis (or Ouranidon polis), which was founded at the end of the 4th century BC. SW. of the village, a sanctuary dating from the late archaic to the Hellenistic era (late 6th - 2nd century BC) was excavated. Among the mobile findings, the clay statues of winged Nikes stand out. Outside the village you can see the canal that was opened in 480 BC. the Persian king Xerxes at the narrowest point of the peninsula, to save the Persian fleet the dangerous passage of Athos during its voyage to southern Greece.
