On the rocky peninsula of Lykythos (Kastro), excavations revealed traces of habitation from the early Bronze Age (3rd millennium BC) and remains of houses from the early Iron Age (11th - 8th century BC).
The ancient city was founded by Chalcidians of Evia. In 348 BC it was occupied by the Macedonians and in 168 BC. the Romans.
The Castle was one of the two citadels of Toroni and was fortified with a Hellenistic gate.
In the second acropolis (Vigla) walls from the classical (5th - 4th century BC) and early Hellenistic periods (3rd century BC) are visible. Ruins of classical and Roman houses were found. A cemetery with cremations from the 11th - 8th centuries was excavated. BC, very important for the coexistence of local Macedonian pottery with imported protogeometric vessels from Evia. The finds are kept and some of them are exhibited in the Polygyros Museum.
Ruins of an early Christian settlement near the Byzantine fortress of Lykithos with three basilicas and a cemetery. The basilica of Agios Athanasios, the only one outside the walls of the ancient city, was probably an episcopal church. It has been built in an artificial lagoon, in the marsh. The hymnal in the sanctuary and the mosaic floor in the middle aisle (probably 6th century) are preserved.
