In Kastri, a proto-Cycladic citadel fortified with a wall and ramparts was found. It had towers and gates. It is the most important fortified construction of the 3rd millennium BC. in the Cyclades. Variety in the floor plans of the houses, depending on the shape of the available space. Near Kastri, in Chalandriani, a proto-Cycladic cemetery was excavated with built tombs and a great wealth of finds, among which "pan-shaped" vessels with representations of ships. The findings are exhibited in the local Museum and the National Archaeological Museum.
Probably mentioned in Homer's Odyssey as the island of Syria. Hometown of the natural philosopher Pherekydis. From the archaic to the Hellenistic era, two urban centers flourished on the island, Ermoupoli (current capital) and Galissos (Galissas). In Ermoupoli, part of the wall in the E. precinct of the modern stadium is preserved. The hill of the temple of the Dormition is the site of the ancient acropolis, where in the past a votive inscription to the Athena Phratria was read on the rock. An ancient theater can be found further north. Galissos was a fortified town around the hill with the small church of Agia Pakos, where the acropolis with an ancient sanctuary of the "epic" goddess (corruptly survived in the name of the Christian church). At the top of the Argevoto hill, ruins of a 4th c. BC tower-prison. Agricultural settlements flourished inland and on the coast from the 6th c. BC until the 3rd century AD: Varis bay, Dellagratsia (Poseidonia), Phoenicas (with a sanctuary at Agios Stratos), Harassona (an archaic sanctuary at the peak of Araklia), Lotos in the Kiniou gulf, Pidima, Alithini (a sanctuary at the site of Agios Ioannis), Agros, Pagos, Mesaria, Platy Vouni in Apano Meria, Sa Michalis, Kampos, Agios Emilianos (the small Catholic church stands on a 4th century BC prison tower), Schinonisi. In the place Grammata, inscriptions of sailors, votive to their patron Asklepios, engraved on the rocks on the western side of the cove of Gria Spilia, where the god's sanctuary is also located (in the place Agios Fokas).
