TEMPLE OF KARTHAIA ATHENA

The Doric temple, probably attributed to Athena, dates back to around 500 BC. It is a pavilion temple with six columns on its narrow sides and twelve on the long ones, with total dimensions of 23.20 X 11.98 m. The three-level platform is made of blue sipolini, while the superstructure is made of white marble. From the gables and from the central capes come most of the fragments of the sculptural decoration. Based on the parts of the sculptures that have survived, it is concluded that the central theme of the south pediment was probably the Amazon battle or some episode of it.
It is probable that Athena was depicted in the center of the south pediment, while the abduction of Antiope by Theseus was in the position of the promontory, as witnessed by two architectural members, on the top simi of the south side, bearing the inscriptions Theseus and Antiope.
