PREHISTORIC SETTLEMENT OF SKARKOS

MapWeather

On the hill of Skarkos, there is the homonymous Proto-Cycladic settlement with its cemetery.
The Bronze Age civilization (2000-1500 BC) that flourished there was destroyed by the eruption of the Thera volcano. The settlement has an area of approximately 11 acres and is kept in very good condition. With the archaeological excavations, which continue to this day, a district was revealed to the east of the hill as well as parts of buildings to the west, towards the port side. From the findings, it appears that this settlement flourished in the middle of the Early Bronze Age. The urban structure of the settlement is dense and all the buildings are built around an imaginary center. The streets were 2m wide. and there were four-sided squares.
The buildings found served as residences and included areas for cooking, storage areas for agricultural products, etc. Several clay vessels, figurines, stone vessels, etc. were also found in the settlement. Also, from the research of the data, it emerges that in the prehistoric settlement of Skarkos there was an internal organization and social stratification.
