ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE OF KATAPOLA - Amorgos

Ancient Katapola ("against the city") is the port of the ancient city of Minoa, a colony of the Samians. The excavations of the Archaeological Society and the University of Ioannina brought to light sacred, public and private buildings as well as parts of a wall that ended at Katapola beach. The natural port of Katapola is referred to in inscriptions and various written sources as the "limin" ("Amorgos, Tripolis, the port"). The heyday of the port and the surrounding bays is known from the end of the 4th millennium until the 3rd millennium (Early Bronze Age). For the northern coast of the port, Xylokeratidi, there is information that it flourished in the 2nd millennium (Late Bronze Age). At the site of Katiforida, parts of burials (chamber-shaped with a road) of the 3rd and 2nd millennium were found. The remains of the port are few.
