3 km east of Sitia, the Hellenistic city of Trypitos was discovered, which is probably identified with the ancient city of Itia (or Itis). The city (mid 4th-mid 1st century BC), built on a mound, occupied the entire Trypitos peninsula. To the south it was protected by a strong wall made of irregular stones (1.8 m wide). Inside the wall, various buildings such as houses and parts of military installations can be seen. A room of dimensions (7.5x5m.), with a rectangular hearth (grit) in its center, as well as a number of coins are the most important finds.
Near the eastern coast of Trypitos, a neosoiko (30m long, 5.50m wide and 5m high) of Hellenistic times was found, with a slope of 15-30 degrees towards the sea. The shape of the new house is parallelepiped and was open from above. Traces of some kind of latch were found on the rock, probably for securing the ship that was kept there.
