MERCURY AND VENUS SANCTUARY

MERCURY AND VENUS SANCTUARY - Heraklion

The sanctuary is located on the southern slopes of the Diktis massif, specifically the Aegean mountain and at an altitude of 1130 m. Its karst environment is impressive, as is the geological relief with the smooth slope, the steep wooded slopes in BA. and its wide opening to the NW. it looks like a theater space, with the Libyan sea as a distant backdrop.

The first great period of prosperity of the sanctuary is contemporary with the old palaces of Minoan Crete (19th-17th century BC). It is represented by two extensive building complexes, with structurally shaped outdoor space for each complex. The second and important period of prosperity in the sanctuary coincides with the era of the new palaces (16th - 140th century).
