WALL OF ANCIENT LEFKADA - Lefkada

In the Kalligoni area, 2 km east of the country, is Nirikos, the ancient city of Lefkada that covered a large area, from Kalligoni and Kariotes to the slopes of Koulmos (Acropolis) and the coast of Akarnania. In the archaeological site of Nirikou, architectural remains from the walling of the ancient city can be seen. The wall surrounded the city for a length of 4.5 km and was reinforced with rectangular towers. The surviving ruins date back to the classical and Hellenistic era, while there are also repairs to some parts of the wall dating back to Roman times. Ancient Nirikos was founded by the Corinthians at the end of the 7th century BC. h. and was abandoned around 1300.
