Tilos

TILOS (Archaeological Site)

Remains of Neolithic habitation have been identified in the Harkadio cave. In the Bronze Age (3rd - 2nd millennium BC) Minoan (Lakkas, Garipa) and then Mycenaean (Kastellos) influence on the island is found.

Near the Megalo Chorio, in the N. of the island, there is the most important, probably early, Doric settlement with the acropolis at the top (Castle) and the town of the 4th c. BC on the S. slope of the hill. The houses were supported by impressively tall tower-like towers, while the domestic cistern was dug on the ground floor behind the tower.

The city of Tilos seems to have developed from classical times onwards. Lower than the city, the cemetery was located. In Livadia Bay, ruins of an ancient fortress were found. North of Megalo Chorio, near the church of the Asomatas, early Christian tombs were discovered.
