Traces of habitation on the island have been found since the Late Neolithic Age (4000-3000 BC) and the Early/Middle Bronze Age (2300-2000 BC). The acropolis on the Kastelo hill, south of the Gulf of Palatia, is connected to the Saro of historical times, where the remains of a fortification on the western slope are preserved, as well as two carved chambered tombs. In the Palatia position, east of the sanctuary of the church of Agia Sophia, you can see the apse and the chancel of a large early Christian basilica and a short distance to the northwest the bath of the same era.
Two more basilicas have been identified on the slope north of the bay, while a three-aisled basilica with a narthex also exists on top of the ancient acropolis in Kastelo.
