Karpathos

APERI ARCHAEOLOGICAL SITE

On Koraki hill, a possible acropolis of the ancient city of Karpathos, extensive remains of a castle from the era of the Kornaris are preserved. At the fine site of Pini, near Bolada, there may have been an outdoor sanctuary of Apollo, as is inferred from an inscription ("Doric resolution") found in the area. On a flat area east of Aperi, the single-aisled two-bay church of Agios Georgios Arapis has the remains of frescoes probably from the 14th century, while to the northwest in the half-demolished church of Agioi Theodoros (Ai Thoris) frescoes are preserved in two layers, the oldest from the 13th century.
