Vistonida. Forty-four thousand acres is boasted to be its area and something more. And it has close neighbors the small lagoons of Fanario or Xirolimni, Arogi, Mesi, Ptelea and Elos in the east (Rhodopi Prefecture) and Lafra, Lafrouda in the west (Xanthi Prefecture). Vistonida was blessed by the three Fates, for this reason they endowed her with rich catches and winged visitors. And the changes in the landscape are a sight to behold, the varied bays and canals, salt marshes and thick reeds, its guardian angel, Ai Nikolas, a small church-island, a watchful eye of holiness, a wooden stunner in our stressful everyday life.
From the lagoon of Vassora in the west of Delta Nestos to Lake Ismarida in the east of Vistonikos Bay, 260 species of birds - races that ignore racism and live in harmony - grow and multiply by wintering on the water surfaces. Here you will meet nine globally threatened species: the Silver Pelican, the Little Egret, the Red-headed Goose, the Mallard, the Kefaludi, the White-tailed Eagle, the Golden Eagle, the Crested, the Little-billed. Protectors of the future, young students, who will make their sensitivity a flag to march on the saving path of ecology.
The Delta of Nestos and Lake Vistonida are included in the Special Protection Areas of the Bird Fauna of the European Union and in the Natura - Nature 2000 network, due to the biodiversity of species and ecosystems.
