PIGEONS - Tinos

One of the most important attractions of Tinos is its pigeon houses. These are buildings that reveal the artistic spirit of the Tinians. They are usually located in places that are open so that the pigeons can move freely and in areas where they are protected from the winds and have access to water. Dovecotes in Tinos are two-story rectangular buildings which have one door for the owner, who uses the lower floor as a warehouse for keeping his tools while the upper floor serves as a pigeon house. Using slate, a material abundant in Tinos, the Tinian craftsmen managed to create masterpieces that are unique monuments of folk art and architecture at the world level
