The church is dedicated to Panagia Kanala, the patron saint of the island. It is built on the rock, near the coastal settlement of Kanala, to which it gave its name.
The miraculous icon of the Virgin Mary is kept there, a wonderful example of post-Byzantine art created by the Cretan painter Antonis Skordilis when he left Crete and fled to the island in the 17th century.
