Today, eight public fountains are preserved in the city of Rethymnon. Of these, only one, the Rimondi fountain, dates back to the time of the Venetian occupation, while the rest are from the Turkish period. They belong to the "esme" type, which is the simplest form of fountain and we can classify them as neighborhood fountains and those that served an adjacent mosque. Most of these fountains were built in recent times by the same Turko-Cretan family, the Klapsari family, which also built the Turkish school. The inscriptions on all Turkish fountains are almost identical.
