Matala is located 67 km southwest of Heraklion and is one of the most visited places. With a worldwide reputation, the area gathered hippies in the 70s where they lived in its famous caves. It presents a strong archaeological interest, since ancient shipwrecks and tombs from the Roman era have been discovered, while it is said that prehistoric people lived in the caves. Matala is a very interesting area with beautiful beaches and many tourist businesses.
