THEOFILOS MUSEUM - Pelion

The Theophilos Museum is housed in the three-story mansion of the Hatzianastasis family (Kotou's house since 1905) in Anakasia, Iolkos Municipality. The stone building (fortress type, with a wooden roof covered with slate slabs) was purchased in 1965 by the Ministry of Culture to function as a Museum. The popular painter Theofilos (1870-1934) lived in Volos from 1897 to 1927 and was a protégé of the landowner Yiannis Kontos for whom he created many works. In 1912 he painted the living room (C-shaped room) of the top floor of the Kotou house in 2 zones. In the lower zone (up to half of the windows) decorative subjects are depicted (e.g. pots with flowers, hunting scenes and the G. Short horseman) while in the upper zone (up to the ceiling) 14 inscribed scenes that chronicle the Greek Revolution of 1821 appear. On the blind wall, 2 landscapes of Pelion can be seen in a single mural. In 1955, a part of the frescoes was destroyed by the earthquakes, while in 1962 the building was classified as a "historic monument".
