Areopolis, which was called Tsimova until 1836, is located around 72 km from Sparta. It is said to have been named so because of its exposure to the winds or because of the god Ares. The Byzantine Museum is housed in a stone building and has various exhibits from the churches of Mani. Byzantine architectural elements of the iconostasis, marble slabs, clay and glass religious vessels (lamps, incense burners, flasks), metal chalices, portable icons and crosses as well as fragments of frescoes are exhibited in its rooms. Also of interest are the manuscripts and the Gospels displayed in the floor showcases.
