The Library was founded in 1972 and in 1989 it was relocated to a modern privately owned building. It includes: section of Laconic Bibliography, sections for adults and children, information center, audio-visual media section with CD and video section, magazine and newspaper section, mobile unit section. The printed and electronic material available to the public consists of 80,000 books, 130 local newspaper and magazine titles, 250 magazine titles, 2,000 music CDs, 800 video cassettes, 500 CDROM/DVDs, etc.
The selection of the Library as the institution responsible for the Nikiforos Vrettakos Archive was made by the poet himself shortly before his death. The Archive was opened in 2000 and includes his family and personal correspondence, photographs, honours, personal effects and his Library. In January 2002 a tribute to the poet was released in CDROM format.
The event hall of the D. Sparta Spiritual Center is housed on the ground floor of the Library. If we go down Lykourgou Street from the central square, after K. Palaiologou, we will find the Archaeological Museum on the right and the temple of the patron saint of Sparta, Saint Nikonos the Repentant, on the left. The reconstruction of the temple began at the end of the 40s, was interrupted for a few years and continued in 1953, based on a new plan by the academician A. Orlandos. In 1954, the small church of the saint that was built in 1900 and was located next to the church was demolished. The memory of Saint Niconos (November 26) is celebrated with particular splendor in the city. Opposite the temple is a park with a fountain and next to it is the pedestrian street of Kleombrotou, with the beautiful stone-built fountain.
