FOLKLORE - ETHNOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF EDESSA

In a two-story building from 1932 in the Varosi district, this well-kept museum is housed in a beautiful one-story building from 1932, donated by the Sivena family. An excellent exhibition takes you on a journey through everyday life from the middle of the last century to the 1950s.

On the ground floor and on both floors of the Museum, the visitor can get to know the lifestyle, culture, manners and customs of the inhabitants of the city and the wider region.

Rural life, Animal husbandry, Sericulture, Textiles, Candlemaking, but also urban life of the city are some of the topics that will pique your interest, along with of course the excellent local costumes.

An excellent collection of women's & men's costumes (1880-1920) is presented, showing the differentiation of the clothes of the city (urban life of an industrial city) in relation to those of the rural countryside. Macedonian (local) clothing as well as Vlach & Refugee clothing will pique your interest.

Thematic Sections with objects from the human life cycle (Birth - Marriage - Death) with special sections for children's toys (slings, balls, balls, cloth dolls, woven tiles) for rituals (fortune readings, baptisms, etc.) but also household and professional tools from traditional professions (shoemaker, blacksmith, coppersmith, tinsmith, jug maker, etc.), traditional costumes, representations of scenes from the daily life of the city's inhabitants (19th-early 20th century) make up our collection of exhibits of the museum on the two additional floors of the building.

The museum also has a collection of rare ecclesiastical and educational books, the oldest of which is an Old Testament from 1753.
