ARCHAEOLOGICAL MUSEUM OF PELLA - Pella

The Archaeological Museum of Pella is located on the southeastern foothills of the ancient city's palace hill, in the northeastern part of the archaeological site to be visited, in the immediate vicinity of the modern settlement to the east.

The museum is the natural destination of the visitor to the archaeological site, where he is given the opportunity to reconstruct the archaeological evidence provided by the monuments during his tour and to understand the various aspects of the daily and public life of the Macedonian capital. That is why the thematic sections of the exhibition harmonize with the excavation areas of the site, without being disconnected from each other. As they are placed on different levels, which correspond to the topography of the area, the visitor's continuous visual contact with almost all thematic units, as well as the archaeological site itself, is ensured through the openings-windows of the building. The rectangular atrium of the building is a reference to the central peristyle courtyard of the houses of Pella.

In the information section, through texts, photographs, maps, drawings and a large scale model of the archaeological site, visitors are provided with the necessary information for getting to know ancient Pella. Thus, he is informed about the geomorphological evolution of the area, basic historical data about the city and the excavations, about the urban planning system and the fortifications. The identity of the city is confirmed by inscribed ceiling tiles with its name (PELLIS), while its historical phases are represented by selected coins from the excavations of various sites, coins of Macedonian kings (from Alexander I to Perseus), but also from the years after Roman conquest of 168 BC
