In the northern part of the Prefecture of Kilkis, on the border between Greece and Macedonia, is Lake Doirani, which covers an area of 42.8 km2, of which 15.6 km2 belong to Greece. Here grows a unique wetland with rich vegetation and 36 rare species of birds (white egret, coot, snipe, avocet, etc.). The Doirani Lake Museum was created by the Municipality of Doirani in collaboration with the Goulandris Museum of Natural History and the Hellenic Center for Wetland Habitats. Its purpose is to inform and raise awareness among the public about wetland ecosystems and in particular about Lake Doirani. The Museum is housed in a newly built building of traditional architecture on the outside and modern style on the inside. The permanent exhibition is presented in large color banners, with screens, photographs of birds and plants, maps concerning the existing wetlands in the Greek area. There are also informative topics about the flora (myriophylla, river sedges, reeds, reeds...), the fauna (gannets, grebes, cormorants, mute swans...) as well as about the life of fishermen in the area. Among the exhibits stand out the old fishing tools of the fishermen, nets and hooks as well as a wooden plava (boat) named Domna in the basement of the Museum. In the future, an aquarium with the fish fauna of the lake will operate in the area. nets and ropes as well as a wooden plava (boat) named Domna in the basement of the Museum.
